Homelessness and Social Service Task Force Intern

Open Opportunity

About

Ventura County is looking for a student intern to be on their Homelessness and Social Service Task Force.

The volunteer work would be to create and update a spreadsheet listing all of the expenses and potential expenses of homeless to hopefully demonstrate that concrete action to open full time housing and one stop service centers will actually be more cost effective than what takes place now.

The students would list activities, such as the cost to house one person in a hospital, or the cost to stores to replace or retrieve shopping carts. There are also other “costs” that are harder to measure in exact dollars. This includes the value/cost of lost business to downtown Ventura stores because some people may avoid shopping there due to the high number of homeless and panhandling activity.

The folks I’m working with aren’t sure how to best gather this data in an easy to digest tool. The ultimate intention is to be able to create a PowerPoint presentation to give to city councils and the County Board of Supervisors in the hopes that it will move them to be more proactive in trying a different approach.  The students would simply be inputting it, most likely in a google doc spreadsheet that will live in the cloud.
